Last Monday, an 7.8 magnitude earthquake affected ten municipalities in southern Turkey and large swaths of northern Syria, with a combined population of 17 million people. With over 6,000 buildings collapsing, the impact has been widespread, and many communities have been seriously impacted, especially with temperatures reaching as low as -6° C. In this dire time, we are reaching out to ask for your support, no matter how large or small.

Who we are supporting

The organizations were carefully chosen by a committee of student from both the Turkish and Syrian communities represented on Sciences Po Paris campus. Donations will be split evenly between both organizations:

The White Helmets officially known as Syria Civil Defense is a volunteer organization that operates in parts of opposition-controlled Syria and in Türkiye. Currently, they are conducting their rescuing operations. Over 3,000 White Helmets volunteers are on the ground searching for survivors and pulling the dead from collapsed buildings.

We are collecting donations for AHBAP, a Turkish non-profit and non-partisan NGO that is actively aiding rescue efforts and providing relief in earthquake-affected regions of Turkey through registered members and volunteers on the ground. For the time being, their relief operations focus on providing basic requirements such as water, canned food, sanitary pads, diapers, power generators, winter clothing, coffins (kefen), and temporary housing units.

AHBAP, which was founded in 2017, is one of Turkey's most respected civil society organizations, well-known for its assistance in natural catastrophes and wider poverty relief operations.
